Dermapen Medical Microneedling

What is Medical Microneedling?

Collagen stimulation therapy, or Medical Microneedling, is an advanced skin treatment based on scientific evidence and clinical results. Medical Microneedling involves the use of tiny needles to create micro-wounds in the skin. This stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. Nature’s healing response to wounding the skin activates precious growth factors to regenerate, rejuvenate and revitalise the skin.

What does Dermapen Medical Micrneedling treat?

Dermapen can be used for overall skin rejuvenation. It can also be used to address specific skin issues such as the early signs of ageing, fine wrinkles, sun damage, pigmentation, rosacea, acne, superficial scarring and enlarged pores. This can be used on the face, neck, décolletage, hands and other areas of the body.

What is Dermapen™?

Dermapen™ is a medically engineered device that utilises surgical grade microneedles to deliver effective collagen stimulation. It uses sterile, individually-sealed, disposable needle cartridges for optimal patient safety. Every Dermapen™tip is made up of tiny needles, which use proprietary technology to penetrate vertically into the skin. The needle depth is adjustable and is tailored by your medical professional to the area of skin being treated and the desired outcome. The micro-skin channels that are formed carry up to 80% more topical nutrients, allowing penetration deep into the dermis. This increases the absorption of active ingredients into the skin, stimulating repair at a cellular level and accelerating the regeneration of the skin’s epidermal cells. Dermapen™ treatments rarely need topical anaesthetic as they are usually well-tolerated (its unique oscillating system improves tolerance by diffusing nerve sensation). This allows for a more affordable and efficient treatment with minimal downtime.

When will I see results?

Depending on the desired outcome of your treatment, your medical professional will discuss the number of treatments and interval intervals you are likely to require. General rejuvenation can be achieved in as little as 3 treatments, where as specific skin complaints/scarring/stretch marks etc will often require a minimum of 5-6 sessions. The full benefit from your treatment will be seen 3-6 months following your treatment, and the regeneration process can be seen for up 24 months after. Each individual’s result will vary depending on their own ability to heal and produce collagen.

How do I prepare for Dermapen?

An initial consultation will be carried out on a separate day of your treatment to include patch testing (to exclude allergy if topical anaesthetic is to be used). Our Nurse will ensure talk you through your planned procedure, ensure that you are medically suitable, and discuss pre and post-treatment advice.  Adequate preparation with skincare that contains vitamin A (Retinol) is essential to obtain the best possible result from your treatment, as well as improving your skin recovery period. If you are not already using a Retinol-type product we can prescribe and supply you with options at your initial consultation.

Who is not suitable for this treatment?

  • Roaccutane treatment within the last 6 months
  • Active skin inflammation (eg papulopustular rosacea, severe active acne)
  • Active skin infection (eg herpes simplex/coldsores)
  • Blood disorders (eg haemophilia)
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Skin cancers
  • Keloid scarring
  • Certain medications (our Doctors can discuss this with you)
  • Allergy to topical anaesthetic (if applicable)
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding

What are the risks and potential side effects?

It is normal for your skin to be red and warm after treatment. It may feel tight, followed by some flaking in the days afterwards. Risks such as infection, scarring or pigment changes are rare. Your recovery time will depend on the depth of needle used and how well your skin has been prepared on skincare prior to treatment. There is usually only minimal discomfort afterwards and healing time is on average 2-5 days. We prepare you for the treatment journey and encourage you to contact our clinic should you have any concerns along the way.

Aftercare

Avoiding sun and wearing adequate sunscreen is always important for skin health, but even mores in the weeks following Dermapen. It is important to avoid makeup until the day after your treatment. Skincare products that contain acids eg glycolic/lactic/salicylic etc should be avoided for 48 hours (we can advise you if you are unsure what your home products contain). Avoidance of excessively hot showers, spas and saunas, as well as attending the gym is also important for the following 48 hours. Please ask our medical staff if you are planning another treatment eg dermal filler, laser etc and we will guide you with regard to the best timing.
