Anti-Wrinkle Injections

What are Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Over time the normal movement of muscles under the skin on our face causes creases and folds. At first these skin creases are seen only with movement, but over time these lines are visible without movement giving rise to permanent lines or wrinkles. Anti-wrinkle injections work by temporarily blocking the nerve impulses to the carefully targeted muscles. This relaxes the facial muscles to reduce the movement under these areas in order to soften the appearance of the lines you have, and try to prevent the formation of further lines.

Tiny needles are used to inject the product into the chosen areas and treatment takes only a few minutes. Some of the areas we treat with anti-wrinkle injections are:

  • Frown lines between the eyes
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Pebble chin
  • Teeth grinding (Bruxism)
  • Gummy Smile
  • Neck bands (Platysma)
  • Blepharospasm
  • Excessive underarm sweating (Axillary Hyperhidrosis)

How long do they last?

Maximum facial muscle relaxation is seen 2 weeks after treatment, with best overall settled and natural effect at 4-6 weeks. Results last on average 3-4 months after which time muscle movement recurs and the lines will reappear. At least 3 months must pass between facial treatments. Treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) lasts approximately 6 months.

Who is not suitable for this treatment?

Anti-wrinkle injections are not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Certain nerve conditions such as Myaesthenia Gravis and Lambert-Eaton Syndrome are also contraindications. Your medical suitability for the treatment will be discussed at your consultation with your Doctor.

What are the risks and potential side effects?

As with any medicine, the injection of anti-wrinkle treatments can cause side effects in some patients. There is temporary swelling (usually resolves within 10-20 minutes) and sometimes bruising at the injection sites. Most people experience no side effects, but side effects that can occur include headache, drooping of the eyelid/brow (1%) and facial pain.

Aftercare

It is recommended to avoid lying flat/bending down for 4 hours, vigorous exercise and saunas for 24 hours, and not to rub or massage the treated areas for 72 hours.
